Alison Upton
Club President and Swim Committee Chair
Alison Upton and her husband, Travis, along with their three children: Madisyn, Camryn, and Bennett joined Olde Forest in 2015. Alison is a 2006 graduate of Elon University with a degree in Accounting. Alison went on to obtain her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and currently works as the Managing Director for KPMG LLP.
All three of Alison’s children participate in swim team with her oldest being a Coach. Her daughters also swim year round out of Greensboro. Currently, Alison serves as our President and our Swim Committee Chair. The Uptons love being a part of the OFRC Community. Go Orcas!
Shannon Marshall Hughes
Vice President, Past Club President and Social Chair
Shannon Marshall Hughes joined OFRC in 2011. Shannon, along with her husband Dale, and daughter Cherokee, love coming to OFRC and enjoying all of it’s aspects. Shannon first joined the Board of Directors in 2021 as the Vice President. In 2022, Shannon served as the Club President and now serves as the past club president and social chair.
Shannon has a love for entrepreneurship and is the current owner of Pink & FIERCE in downtown Burlington where she teaches women’s self-defense and Kickboxing classes.
Kenny Winter
Treasurer & Resource Co-chair
Kenny Winter has been a resident of Alamance County for 22 years. He and his wife Marna, have two children, Scout (16) and Kiefer (14) who attend Williams High School. Kenny is currently employed by Orthofix, a medical device company. Their family initially joined OFRC in 2005, left in 2010, and came back for good in 2017. Kenny volunteers annually at OFRC for re-surfacing of the courts and spring clean-up of the grounds.
He has always been passionate about tennis and played at Wofford College. He has served as captain for multiple OFRC USTA leagues, including Men’s Spring 18s & 40s 4.5, 8.0 18+ Mixed doubles, Tri-level and Combo 18s & 40s. Currently he is serving on the Tennis Committee at ORFC. He has always enjoyed meeting members at ORFC and loves the opportunity to serve for 3 years to continue to bring this community together for relaxing at the pool, supporting our awesome swim team, playing tennis & pickleball and more importantly great times.

Julie McPherson
Racquet Sports Committee Chair
Julie McPherson has been a resident of Alamance County her entire life. Throughout her childhood, she spent many summers at Olde Forest Racquet Club participating on the swim team and playing junior tennis. Julie and her husband, Jay, have one son in graduate school who is pursuing a doctoral degree in chemistry. Julie is an Academically/Intellectually Gifted Specialist at Highland Elementary with over 30 years of experience in education.
Julie loves tennis and, as the Racquet Sports Committee Chairperson, is looking forward to maintaining and promoting racquet sports at Olde Forest. She has served as captain for multiple OFRC USTA tennis leagues, including Women’s Spring 40’s 3.5, 18’s Tri-Level, and Fall 6.5 Combo 40’s teams. In addition, she has been the captain of Olde Forest Racquet Club’s Summer Gate City Team. Previously, Julie served on the Alamance-Burlington School System’s AIG Advisory Board and was the past President of Alpha Delta Kappa’s local Tau Chapter.
Woody Pelton
By-Laws Committee Chair
Woody and his wife Chris moved to Burlington in 2009 when Woody began as Dean of Global Studies at Elon University. They joined Olde Forest shortly after that. Both Woody and Chris joined for tennis and play regularly at the Club. They have also taken on pickleball more recently and now play both.
Woody retired from Elon in 2021 and Chris is slowly retiring from her career as a USTA professional line umpire and currently works as field staff at the US Open. In addition to serving on the OFRC Board, Woody also serves on the Board for Preservation Burlington and is involved with the Harwood Institute efforts in Alamance County.
Woody and Chris’ sons live in Santa Fe, NM and Santa Barbara, CA, so their kids and grandkids have not yet made it to the pool.
Diane Smith
Membership Chair
Diane Smith and her husband, Chris, have been members of Olde Forest since 1985. They have four grown children who grew up spending summers at the pool. Currently two of them are Olde Forest members and their children are now enjoying going down the ducky slide like they did! Diane is a former tennis player who is passionate about pickleball. She is captain of the first OFRC pickleball team, Punchy Picklers, formed in the fall of 2022. They have won back-to-back Co-Ed 50+ Novice division championships.
Diane is a retired registered nurse who has served on several school and nursing boards and is past chair of the Burlington Day School Board of Trustees. She is a member of our Racquet Sports Committee and the Membership Committee Chair.
Paul Tapler
Member At Large
Paul Tapler is serving for the first time on the Board of Directors at OFRC, and will be Chairing the Social Committee. Paul, wife Amanda, and their two children, Jacob (13) and Abigail (9) have been OFRC members since 2013. They spend much of their summers enjoying the pool and play tennis socially and with USTA throughout the year.
Currently, Paul manages a Wine Importing and Distribution Company specializing in Italian wines, located in Burlington. Previously, he worked for nine years in the Private Country Club Industry. Paul hopes his knowledge and experience in club management will help support and benefit the OFRC staff and the social committee in planning and implementing fun and entertaining events for all our members.
